Know what is working

Most people put up a website and then have no idea what happens next. Did anyone read the new page. Did the link in the newsletter do anything. Is Monday busier than Friday. Without numbers you end up guessing, and guessing usually means changing the wrong thing.

Analytics turns that into something you can actually look at, in a panel inside your own site settings. You do not need another account or another password.

What you see

How many people are on your site right this moment. How many came today, in the last seven days, and in the last thirty. How many pages they looked at, and a chart of visitors day by day so you can see whether the line is going up.

That is deliberately a small set of numbers. Full analytics tools bury the two or three figures that matter under a hundred you will never use, and the result is that people stop opening them.

Set up automatically

There is nothing to install and no tracking code to paste in. When you publish, your site gets its own analytics set up for you, and the numbers start arriving on their own.

It is included with every hosting plan, so it is not something to remember to add or a box to tick at checkout.

You decide whether it runs at all

Analytics only starts once you turn it on, and before it does we ask you one question: is this site made for children under 13. If it is, we do not run it, because tracking on a site aimed at young children is not something to leave to chance.

You can also switch analytics off at any time, for any reason. Some people would simply rather not measure their visitors, and that is a perfectly good answer.

Numbers worth acting on

Analytics is most useful next to the things that change your traffic. Publish a blog post and watch whether the visits follow. Put a QR code on a menu and see the scans arrive. Act on an SEO tip and check next month whether it moved.

On its own a visitor count is trivia. Alongside something you just did, it is an answer.
